How to Care for a Pregnant Hamster
π Summary
Once a female hamster is pregnant, separate her from the male at once β cohabiting risks fights, the male eating the pups, and a quick re-pregnancy while she nurses. Keep her in a warm (25β29Β°C), quiet, dry, ventilated, clean cage, feed a bit more with constant fresh water, and avoid obesity that can cause dystocia.
1 Separate the Males and Females Promptly
Hamsters are caged together only during breeding. Once a female is pregnant, separate the male at once: even pregnant, the male keeps wanting to mate while the female stops, and clashes can endanger the pups. Hamsters are solitary and should not cohabit except for breeding. Also, after birth the male may eat the pups, and the female comes back into heat about two hours after delivery β if the male senses it, they may mate again, causing another pregnancy while she is still nursing, which badly harms her and risks premature birth or miscarriage. So always separate them once she is pregnant.
2 Provide a Good Environment
A pregnant female is more sensitive to her surroundings; give her a warm, quiet, dry, ventilated, and clean home:
1) Right temperature: hamsters fear cold and can freeze; a pregnant female needs it warmer, around 25β29Β°C.
2) Quiet: she is very sound-sensitive and easily startled; loud noise can cause accidental miscarriage. Keep her away from TVs and noisy spots, and soundproof if the area is loud.
3) Dry: hamsters like dryness; dampness makes them restless and prone to fungal skin disease, which is risky in pregnancy and can cause miscarriage. Keep it dry.
4) Ventilated: urine smells, and a pregnant female urinates more, so ventilate to avoid a strong odor that harms both hamster and owner.
5) Clean: she eats and excretes more, so clean often. Move her to a prepared temporary spot before cleaning and return her after. Also remove the wheel and high platforms to prevent falls and miscarriage.
3 Adjust the Diet
1) Increase the amount: appetite and water intake rise in pregnancy, so feed more and supply fresh water often β essential, especially around delivery, since a thirsty mother may eat her newborns.
2) Supplement, but moderately: you can feed a bit more, but avoid over-nutrition and obesity. An obese pregnant hamster risks dystocia because oversized fetuses cannot be delivered.
