How to Care for a Money Turtle (Three-lined Box Turtle)

๐Ÿ“ Summary

Money turtles need a warm, sheltered pond with sandy substrate, shade plants, and a basking island, plus clean water kept at 24ยฐC+ and a varied omnivorous diet. Separate turtles by size to prevent cannibalism, and protect them from cold and summer heat stroke during hibernation.

1 Caring for a Money Turtle

I. Building the pond

The pond is usually a concrete tank; with only a few turtles you can use an aquarium instead. Money turtles like warm, watery environments, are shy, enjoy burrowing, and will try to escape when people are around.

Given these traits, lay a 30 cm+ layer of sand and soil on the pond bottom and plant aquatic vegetation for shade, rest, and hiding. Build a small rocky island in the center where the turtles can climb out to rest and bask.

Note: larger turtles may eat smaller ones, so keep hatchlings, adults, and breeders in separate enclosures.

II. Water quality

Money turtles are sensitive to water quality; poor water causes illness and appetite loss. Healthy water looks pale green with about 25 cm clarity, so change it as soon as it smells. Concrete-pond water spoils faster than aquarium water, so change it regularly to stay clean.

III. Water temperature

Appetite drops sharply below 24ยฐC and nearly stops at 20ยฐC, so they eat most from June to October. Indoors, keep the temperature above 24ยฐC outside the hibernation season to avoid refusal to eat, lethargy, and stunted growth.

IV. What do money turtles eat?

They are omnivores with a broad diet: fish, shrimp, snail meat, earthworms, minced clam, and cooked organ meat as fresh animal protein, plus some millet and vegetables for vitamins. Add compound vitamins, trace minerals, and calcium occasionally to prevent poor growth and anorexia.

Feeding time: feed on a schedule โ€” midday in spring and autumn, and 5โ€“7 p.m. in summer โ€” to build good eating habits and aid digestion.

Feeding amount: they are active Mayโ€“November and hibernate the rest of the year; they gain weight fastest in Julyโ€“September, so increase feeding then.

V. Hibernation care

As cold-blooded animals, they hibernate below 15ยฐC (from November), burying in the pond-bottom mud without eating or needing water changes. Below 6ยฐC they can freeze to death, so provide artificial heating.

That covers money turtle husbandry. One last warning: in summer heat they can suffer heat stroke and die, so always provide shaded hiding spots.
