1. A chinchilla’s fur is extremely dense, with 60 to 80 hairs per follicle and at least 33,000 hairs per square centimeter. Such density is a double-edged sword: it provides strong cold protection but also makes heatstroke more likely.

2. The coat also helps defend against predators. When attacked, a chinchilla can spray part of its fur at the enemy to confuse or scare it off, then escape.

Because the coat is so important, owners must care for it well. Poor care leads to matting, hair loss, and even skin disease. Keep it clean and healthy by following these steps:

1. Avoid grainy bath sand; use fine dust or volcanic ash instead. Coarse sand cannot reach the roots or absorb skin oils, leading to fur matting that must be trimmed, and it can wear down the coat, causing dullness and increased shedding.

2. Ensure balanced nutrition. Feed enough protein, amino acids, and minerals. Chinchillas have a high protein demand and shed frequently, so alfalfa hay is essential.

3. Keep the enclosure clean, bathe them regularly, and brush their fur often, since unbrushed fur mats easily.

4. Periodically feed a specialized coat-care supplement for better fur condition.
