Some people fear dogs and cross the street to avoid them. Actually getting along is simple - so how to make a dog love you?

1 Overview

Observe closely: a puppy does not hide its feelings – they show in rich expression and body language, joy and anger laid bare.

If new to dogs, you will see it wag and approach but dare not get close, with slight hostility and fear, ready to attack or flee. Slowly wave (don’t scare it) to beckon; it edges nearer until you pat its head and it feels safe.

Many say they don’t know how to communicate; dogs are smart – talk and interact often and they grasp simple cues like fetching or coming when called (be patient; repeat a few times and it remembers).

When feeding, train a little – teach simple things and reward a bite when it obeys.

Emotional exchange matters; like people, a dog alone gets lonely and needs company. Walk and play happily – the most effective way to get close. We are busy, but the dog waits home quietly, calm only at the sound of our returning steps, then excited.
