Keeping a pet is a long-term commitment that includes time, energy, and money. Today I will calculate the total cost of raising an average-sized ordinary cat from kitten to old age.

First, how long does such a cat live on average? Lifespan depends on breed, environment, diet, and health, averaging about 15 years.

How much does it cost to keep a cat in Greece?

Let’s list the categories of expenses:

1. Acquiring a cat. In Greece you can adopt, buy, find a stray, or receive one from a friend. For an ordinary cat we will estimate 200 euros.

2. Vaccinations. A cat needs annual vaccines at about 25 euros each, totaling 375 euros over 15 years.

3. Spay or neuter surgery, estimated at 40 euros.

4. Bedding and a cat tree: bedding replaced twice at 50 euros each (100 euros) plus a 200 euro cat tree, for at least 300 euros in setup costs.

5. Toys: one small toy per year at 15 euros, at least 200 euros.

How much does it cost to keep a cat in Greece?

6. Food and litter. Kittens under 1 year eat 100 g per day; adults eat 200 g per day. At 3 euros per kg, 15 years of cat food costs about 3,200 euros. Litter at 20 euros per month is 240 euros per year, or 3,600 euros over 15 years.

7. Treats and supplements at 10 euros per month, totaling 1,800 euros over 15 years.

8. Medicine and medical care at about 50 euros per year, or 750 euros over 15 years.

9. A funeral. After more than a decade together, a cat deserves a proper farewell, estimated at 100 euros.

Adding the nine items gives 10,565 euros. With some flexibility, the lifetime cost of an average ordinary cat in Greece ranges from 9,000 to 12,000 euros, about 600 to 800 euros per year.
