With timely treatment, a dog’s pulmonary emphysema generally cures in 7 to 14 days. Pulmonary edema, however, has a high death rate and without emergency care the dog dies quickly; its danger period is 3 to 7 days, with sudden onset of labored breathing, bulging eyes, distended veins, blue mucous membranes, and mouth breathing. If you see these signs, take the dog to a clinic at once, since without active treatment it dies within 1 to 3 days.
