A fecal exam usually returns results in about half an hour, and the stool sample is valid for about 2 hours.

It checks for parasites in the stool and shows gut flora activity, and supports kit tests such as for canine distemper, parvovirus and coronavirus.

If the dog has diarrhea, watery stool or blood in stool, a fecal test at the hospital can help rule out causes.
