Small goldfish may die after only about 2 to 3 minutes out of water, though some can last 5 to 10 minutes. Goldfish rely on their gills to extract oxygen from water and cannot breathe oxygen from the air, so they die quickly once removed from water.
Furthermore, during keeping you should maintain adequate oxygen in the water, since insufficient oxygen can also kill them, and some fish may jump out of the tank when oxygen-starved. If a fish jumps out and is not treated promptly, it will soon die.
