How long can a dog with hypocalcemia (low blood calcium) survive?

If treated promptly, a dog with hypocalcemia generally is not in life-threatening danger. Postpartum females are most prone to it, and symptoms include weakness, twitching, and reduced appetite.

If you notice these signs, take the dog to a veterinary hospital as soon as possible. You can supplement calcium with calcium tablets and calcium-rich food, and let the dog get more sunlight.

Before a female gives birth, make sure she receives enough calcium to prevent postpartum hypocalcemia.
