How long after contractions until a cat gives birth?

After contractions start, a cat usually gives birth within 1-3 hours. Contractions are regular tightening of the lower uterus, short and weak. If more than 4 hours pass after contractions begin and the cervix has not opened, it usually means dystocia risk.

This risk is higher for small or very young pregnant cats, so take the cat to a vet promptly; the vet will decide between oxytocin to assist labor or a cesarean section.
