Teddy dogs are highly intelligent, ranking just below the Border Collie among common breeds, with a mental level like a 6-7-year-old child. During training they quickly learn and remember simple commands, and can even master difficult tasks like jumping hurdles or spinning.

They are also very perceptive, reading the owner’s mood from tone and gestures, and will shamelessly beg for food when the owner is happy.
