Before labor, a Teddy usually shows restlessness, heavy panting, nest-digging, and a drop in body temperature; squeezing the breasts gently yields a little milk. Just before delivery, a small discharge appears at the vulva, then the dog shows intermittent straining and clear abdominal contractions until puppies are born one by one.
After giving birth, the Teddy bites the umbilical cord and licks the pups clean; within 5 to 15 minutes after delivery it passes the placenta, and some dogs eat the placenta to gain nutrition.
