A pregnant dog’s breathing rate is normal, but in hot weather it pants with a louder wheeze to cool down. As the uterus grows it presses the chest, so late pregnancy brings heavy panting with slight activity.
Before labor the dog may breathe rapidly, pant, and feel anxious, also normal. Gestation is usually 58-64 days; if the water breaks, prepare a quiet, comfortable whelping area.
