A German Shepherd can start retrieve training at 3 to 4 months. Prepare a ball or frisbee it likes, then when its attention is on you or the toy, throw it and command the dog to bring it back. At first it may only bite and not return it; that is fine.
After it plays a while, pick up the toy, reward a snack, pet its head, and praise verbally. After enough repeats, the German Shepherd learns what to do.
