First check the build: strong bones, standard proportions, moderate eyes and triangular or upright ears. Then check the teeth and bite; avoid severe underbite or overbite.

Also check spirit: a healthy dog is lively with good appetite and no bad breath, soft stool or drowsiness. For a guard dog choose one with strong territorial instinct that warns you with a growl when approached.
