1 Where growth stands at eight months

By eight months a German Shepherd has usually reached sexual maturity and has moved past the peak of its puppy growth spurt. The long, lanky phase is largely behind it, but the dog is still maturing and will continue to add muscle and body mass well into its second year.

Males are typically larger than females. A healthy eight-month-old often stands around 60 cm (about 24 inches) at the shoulder and weighs in the neighborhood of 25 kg (roughly 55 pounds), though individual lines and genetics produce plenty of variation.

2 What the body looks like

At this age the dog should already show a defined, muscular build rather than a soft puppy roundness. The classic coloration is a black saddle and black face over a light gray (or tan) body, though coat shades vary across the breed.

3 Exercise and bone development

Because the skeleton is still developing, controlled exercise matters. Regular, moderate activity supports healthy bone and joint formation and helps the young Shepherd burn energy, but avoid forced long runs, jumping, or repetitive high-impact work until the growth plates close. A mix of free play, leash walks, and basic training is ideal at this stage.
