1 Hamster Coat Problems
1. Color change
Many causes: Campbell’s/Dwarf hamsters show ‘winter white’ — turning white in winter (Pudding, Silver Fox, Purple variants). Driven by daylight length, so it can appear in other seasons by region. Most carry the gene but mixed genetics make it subtle and often not reversible.
Some Winter White (Djungarian) ‘silver diamond’ neck rings fade with age. ‘Silvering’ appears mainly in black-bear-line Winter Whites.
2. Hair loss
Causes: (1) Seasonal — common in long-haired Syrians in summer to cope with heat. (2) Aging — older hamsters shed broadly or fade. (3) Skin disease — mites or fleas cause itching, dandruff, hair loss.
3. Hairballs
Cats and rabbits groom and swallow fur, needing hairball paste. Long-haired Syrians also ‘spit-bathe’ and may swallow fur, possibly needing hairball aid; dwarf and short-haired Syrians generally do not.
Hamster coats are far less than cats’ or dogs’, so little grooming is needed — but find the cause and act if coat problems appear.
