I. Goldfish Living Habits

1. Goldfish are lively and active, but gentle, with no aggressive behavior.

2. They love to eat; with good temperature and ample food they have a great appetite and keep eating.

3. Goldfish are omnivorous with a wide diet, mainly animal-based. Feed protein-rich food plus fats, carbs, vitamins, minerals, and trace elements to meet growth needs.

3. Goldfish sleep with eyes open – no eyelids – and gently wave their front fins to stay balanced. They usually sleep in dim spots like under plants, still – normal rest.

4. They suit schooling and dense keeping, but control density; too high density spoils water fast and cuts oxygen, causing sickness or death. Keep body length to tank length above 1:10, change water regularly, keep good quality and oxygen.

5. Goldfish are cold-blooded; body temperature follows water, but they can’t take sudden swings of 5C or more, which can be fatal. Best growth is 20-28C, with high activity, appetite, and oxygen use. Lower temps are fine but cut activity and appetite. Extreme highs or lows don’t kill but affect feeding, growth, and breeding.

6. They like slightly alkaline water, pH 7.5-8.0. In spring as temperature rises they enter breeding; watch temperature then.

II. Goldfish Types

1. Grass type: the oldest Chinese goldfish and ancestor. Common grass goldfish are easy to keep, a top pick for beginners.

2. Wen type: shaped like the character ‘wen’. Common ones: domestic lion, Thai lion, ryukin, red cap (with a red head, very cute), tosa, etc. Red cap has a special trait – it detects water quality; in bad water its tail reddens.

3. Dragon type (pop-eye): common ones are dragon-eye and butterfly tail, with eyes bulging outside the socket in many shapes – round, pear, tube, grape – by breed.

4. Egg type: short and stout, no dorsal fin, eyes not protruding. Common: ranchu, lionhead. These are hardier than dragon or wen types.
