Foods Hamsters Can Eat (Part 6)
π Summary
Hamsters are omnivores, but not everything is safe. Green beans, a little dragon fruit or strawberry, and dried leafy greens are fine in small amounts β yet sugary fruit strains the liver and kidneys and risks diabetes, and fruit hidden in the cheek pouches rots and inflames them. Avoid durian (its smell upsets hamsters) and cold fruits like mango. More diet restrictions are covered in Part 1.
1 Foods Hamsters Can Eat
1. Green beans. Wash and dry them, then feed. They’re rich in fiber, vitamins, and minerals and aid gut movement. But too many irritate the gut and cause diarrhea or vomiting, so don’t overdo green beans, cucumbers, carrots, or other veggies.
2. Dragon fruit. A little is fine, but check it isn’t stashed in the cheek pouches β spoiled fruit breeds bacteria and inflames the pouches. It’s also sweet; too much sugar harms the teeth and can cause diarrhea or hair loss, so it’s best avoided.
3. Strawberries. They’re water- and vitamin-rich, so a small amount is okay. But the sugar taxes the liver and kidneys and can cause obesity or diabetes. Young hamsters in particular shouldn’t get them β they can’t handle the water and may develop severe diarrhea.
4. Leafy greens. Wash and dry them into crisp greens before feeding; this avoids water-driven diarrhea, and the slight crunch lets the hamster wear down its teeth while eating.
5. Durian. A hamster’s keen nose may rebel at durian’s pungent smell and feel unwell, so it’s not recommended. If your hamster tolerates the odor, a tiny bit is acceptable.
Cold fruits like mango are also best avoided, as they can cause diarrhea and vomiting. (See Part 1 for more on hamster diet restrictions.)
