Foods Hamsters Can Eat (Part 1)
📝 Summary
Hamsters are easy to feed and not picky, but some human foods need care. This guide covers millet, banana (better as chips), peach, plum, and jujube—all in small amounts alongside a proper seed mix, since too much water or sugar brings diarrhea or kidney strain.
1 Foods Hamsters Can Eat
Millet: hamsters can eat it, but not much—lots of raw millet easily causes indigestion and bloat. In daily feeding, pair millet with mealworms and low-water vegetables for balanced nutrition.
Banana: they can eat banana, but banana chips are better. Fresh banana is very watery and aids the bowels, so it can trigger diarrhea; small pets shouldn’t have very watery produce. Bananas also rot in the cheek pouches and cause pouch inflammation.
Peach: feed a little, after peeling and cutting into small pieces. Peaches are high in water and sugar; too much burdens the kidneys and irritates the gut, causing soft stool or diarrhea—so keep it small.
Plum: the tartness in moderation aids digestion and adds vitamins, but remove the pit and don’t overfeed. Base the diet on a quality grain mix or a tooth-wearing synthetic pellet.
Jujube (date): fine as a small supplement for vitamins, but the main energy should come from staple food, which supplies the core nutrients; supplements add protein, vitamins, and trace elements.
Diet management is vital to a hamster’s health—poor feeding leads to malnutrition and illness. For more on hamster diet, continue with part two of this series.
