1) Genetics

Many rabbits have fine fur and little foot-sole coverage, poorly wear-resistant, with fragile skin. They stand long in cages and sometimes stamp and jump, increasing friction with the floor—wearing the sole fur and causing skin damage and infection that leads to foot dermatitis.

2) Body size

Size and build change how weight falls on the feet. Small, light rabbits bear less; obese or front-narrow/back-wide rabbits load the feet too much, wearing the sole fur faster and eventually causing dermatitis.

3) Hutch hygiene

Rabbits are delicate; dampness greatly affects health. They like dry and are sensitive to temperature and humidity. A dirty, damp hutch breeds pathogens; once the foot is slightly worn, it is easily infected—Staphylococcus causes foot dermatitis.

4) Cage floor construction

Floor construction is a key cause. Infection needs a wound first; poor floors with splinters, nails, or sharp bumps scratch the feet, and with bacteria present, dermatitis follows. Many rabbits are hurt by bad floors—choose a flat floor to reduce wear. Since rabbits live in cages, pick a good one.
