A dog that coughs on eating may have a respiratory infection, tonsil or throat inflammation, and esophageal dilation or diverticulum cannot be ruled out; these cause swallowing difficulty and cough.

Take it for blood inflammation tests, X-rays and esophageal/gastric endoscopy (puppies also check for distemper). Infection raises inflammation; endoscopy shows if the esophagus or stomach is widened, guiding the best plan and diet care.
