Diarrhea isn’t a disease but a clinical sign

Diarrhea is complex with many causes. Sometimes self-resolving or fixed by diet change; sometimes a deep, life-threatening disease.

Various causes make stool pass too fast, preventing nutrient/water/electrolyte absorption, so more frequent, uncontrolled, soft or watery stool with mucus or blood.

Diarrhea may be self-protection

Dog diarrhea expels toxins and bacteria — protective; using anti-diarrheal at once traps microbes and their toxins, prolonging illness; severe lasting diarrhea causes dehydration and electrolyte loss. So observe half a day to a day; if no improvement, try an anti-diarrhea medication.

Use antibiotics correctly

Many owners think antibiotics cure diarrhea, but only bacterial diarrhea needs the right antibiotic. Diarrhea is a sign; most involve gut inflammation. Chronic/repeated diarrhea may signal serious external disease — overactive thyroid, kidney/liver disease, nerve abnormality, viral infection, immune disorder, lymphoma.

Treatment targets the cause

Correct treatment depends on the root cause, internal or external. Diagnose promptly, treat the cause, clear the gut, stop diarrhea at the right time, support and symptomatically treat, maintain water/electrolyte balance.
