1. Unfamiliar with you: A newly homed dog may be guarded and refuse touch until it knows you and the home.

5. Lack of socialization: A dog with little human contact may not want to be touched.

6. Personality: Some nervous dogs simply dislike close contact — common in small breeds.

7. Annoyance: If you’ve upset it, it may refuse. Win it back with favorite treats or toys to rebuild trust.

8. Habit: Poor early socialization leaves some dogs tense around strangers and unwilling to be petted. Every dog differs — understand and respect its feelings, and never force it.
