Do Dogs Get Grumpy When Woken Up?

πŸ“ Summary

Today we look at why dogs seem to have 'morning grumpiness.'

1 Overview

Interrupted dream

We don’t know dog dreams, but a dog startled from deep sleep has brief confusion – so do people.

Never disturb a deeply sleeping person or dog.

Not grumpiness

Strictly, dogs don’t have grumpiness; the anger or even aggression when woken is the startle reflex in behavior science.

It’s instinct: in a dangerous wild, a sleeping animal must strike back at once to survive.

Those seconds are life-or-death. Even after thousands of years, many dogs keep this reflex.

States

Like people’s varied grumpiness, a dog’s ‘wake-up mood’ has types.

Threat: a dog showing teeth or low growls is actually gentle – don’t provoke; just awake, its only thought is self-defense.

Attack: rare but real; some bite directly. With elderly or kids at home, be careful.

Lost senses: common – a startled dog briefly loses hearing and looks panicked, even attacking people or other dogs.

Note: it’s not dislike of being woken, but a survival instinct triggered by sudden waking from deep sleep.

So how to correct it?

You can’t – it’s genetic; training won’t fix it. Only avoid disturbing deep sleep.

But there’s a fix: if you must wake it (it blocks your path), don’t get close – call its name softly from afar.

Don’t think harshness will ‘cure’ it – violence only worsens the reflex and causes tragedy.

Finally, if it’s twitching, blinking, jerking, or vocalizing in sleep, wake it gently – it may be having a nightmare.
