White spot, cloudy eye, saprolegniasis, enteritis, fin/tail rot, and dropsy are common goldfish diseases with different causes, signs, and treatments. Learn them to act early. Below are causes and treatments.

Common goldfish diseases: causes and treatments

1. White spot (ich): Caused by Ichthyophthirius (the ‘small gourd worm’); poor water lets it multiply. Signs are white spots on body and fins. Early cases respond to the ‘old three methods’—raise temperature, change water, add salt. The parasite dies above 28°C; with water changes the fish heals in 3–7 days, and stop feeding during treatment. Severe cases need medication.

2. Cloudy eye: From poor water or surface injury. In early stages apply erythromycin ointment to the eye 2–3 times daily, changing water every 2 days; heals in 3–7 days.

3. Saprolegniasis: A fungal infection from poor water or low temperature. Early use the old three methods; if no improvement in 7 days, bath in yellow powder or methylene blue for about 20 minutes, about 3 days.

4. Enteritis: Usually from overeating, or live bloodworms. Mild cases: water change, salt, and heat kill most bacteria. Severe cases need a furancillin bath, and if needed gentamicin or erythromycin antibiotics.

Also, enteritis from internal parasites needs oxytetracycline for the whole tank—1 g per 40 L, after changing 1/3 of the water; about 3 days of dosing heals it.

5. Red streaks, fin/tail rot

Red streaks come from dirty water; fin/tail rot from dirty water or wound infection. Treatment is simple: raise change frequency and apply erythromycin to the spot; heals in days. Severe rot needs a methylene blue or Japanese yellow powder bath.

6. Swim bladder disorder: From rising ammonia/nitrogen toxins, low oxygen, or sharp objects scratching organs. Treat with anti-inflammatory drugs like oxytetracycline; if from low oxygen, add oxygen.

7. Dropsy (pinecone disease): From poor water and bacterial infection. Try yellow powder or methylene blue baths; if ineffective, use potassium permanganate baths with extra aeration. Severe cases may be untreatable.
