Common Abnormal Rabbit Droppings
π Summary
Rabbit diarrhea varies by cause β simple overeating, too much protein or grain, mild fermentation, or E. coli β and each calls for a different fix built around short fasting, gut probiotics, and diet correction. Watery, foul droppings may signal the dangerous Clostridium perfringens and need immediate fluids.
1 Indigestion
Cause: too much food for the gut to handle. Signs: dropped appetite, uneven, irregular, elongated droppings. Fix: fast 12β24 hours with water only, give half a domperidone tablet to clear the gut, then a digestive tablet twice daily for 2β3 days and a lactase tablet four times daily for 2β3 days to rebuild good flora.
2 Too Much Protein and Carbohydrate
Cause: excess pellets or alfalfa, sometimes called ‘nutritional stool.’ Signs: clustered or ropy droppings with a shiny coat and a strong fishy smell, usually at night and normal by day. Fix: cut alfalfa and pellets, add grass hays like oat, rye, or timothy; feed pellets at 3β5% of body weight plus a handful of alfalfa daily; give a pet lactic-acid or probiotic culture for five days.
3 Mild Fermentation
Cause: too much grain or starch at once. Signs: paste-like or ropy droppings with no mucus. Fix: fast 24 hours with water only, then a lactic-acid tablet twice daily for 2β3 days, or lactase four tablets twice daily for 2β3 days.
4 E. coli Infection
Cause: mostly under-six-month kits from bad diet, weather swings, or stress β act within four hours of signs. Signs: soft droppings with mucus or jelly-like coating. Fix: fast 24 hours; norfloxacin two-thirds of a capsule twice daily for three days; lactase four tablets three hours after each dose for three days; vitamin C one tablet daily for three days; if you can inject, enrofloxacin or gentamicin per label; keep the rabbit warm on a heating pad.
5 A Warning
Watery droppings with a very strong fishy smell may be Clostridium perfringens disease, which is hard to treat β get fluids in at once.
