Clicking Sounds, Dry Heaving, and Coughing

A dog coughing and dry heaving may indicate a bacterial or viral respiratory infection or a foreign object scratching the esophagus, so it is best to take the dog to the vet promptly for diagnosis and treatment. If a hospital visit is not immediately possible, the dog can be given doxycycline tablets and honeysuckle extract tablets to relieve cough and phlegm; for severe coughing, a pet anti-inflammatory such as amoxicillin or cefadroxil may be needed. Keep the dog warm in daily care to avoid worsening, and encourage drinking to aid metabolism. If there is no improvement, the symptoms may be mismatched to the treatment, so take the dog to a clinic for X-rays, blood tests, and respiratory examination to confirm and treat.
