How to care for a chinchilla’s coat well

Chinchilla fur isn’t cleaned with water — use dust baths, not water unless necessary. For healthy fur, regularly groom and give good nutrition; diet matters too:

1. Feed properly

Chinchillas have dense follicles and frequent coat renewal, so need lots of protein — more than other animals. Alfalfa is key, their main protein and amino-acid source. Also minerals: feed mulberry leaves for high mineral content.

Generally, quality main food meets most needs, so good kibble can replace alfalfa. But some have delicate guts and reject high-protein food, including high-protein kibble — pick the right food per individual; for those, use alfalfa.

2. Clean the coat regularly

For healthy fur, regular cleaning is essential. Use fine dust bath powder or volcanic ash. Don’t over-clean — adjust frequency to weather and coat; higher humidity → more often, lower → less. Too frequent causes dry skin and problems.

Also adjust frequency to situation. Chinchillas molt twice a year; during molt groom and clean more often.
