1. Canine Coronavirus

Canine coronavirus is a contagious gastrointestinal disease causing vomiting and diarrhea. It can occur year-round, especially in winter; sick and carrier dogs are the main sources, spreading via direct or indirect contact through the respiratory and digestive tracts. It is rarely fatal to adult dogs but is dangerous to puppies—if a puppy is co-infected with parvovirus, mixed-infection mortality can reach 90%.

1. The disease can appear in varying severity under crowding, poor living conditions, sudden weather changes, or long-distance transport—a newly adopted dog stressed by travel may develop transport-stress coronavirus.

2. The incubation period is under a week and spread is rapid. Early signs resemble a common cold’s gut reaction, then lethargy, sleepiness, and vomiting appear. Stools progress from paste-like to watery, orange or green. A few dogs show fever, low white-cell count, or dehydration; without prompt care, it can be fatal.

3. How Is It Treated

There is no targeted cure—treatment only stabilizes symptoms. Help your dog stop vomiting and diarrhea and maintain nutrition. For severe vomiting/diarrhea, withhold food and water until 24 hours after symptoms fade, then feed small amounts. If dehydrated, use IV fluids to restore electrolyte balance.
