Amazing, right? Foreign scientists thought so too, so they began all kinds of research.

If dogs or other animals truly predicted quakes, it would benefit all humanity.

But sadly, scientists worldwide tested animal prediction β€” in the 1970s the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) studied many animals’ odd reactions versus quakes and found no necessary link.

These Germans were the first team worldwide to use statistics to verify the claim β€” before that, ideas came only from stories and news.

The study examined abnormal pre-quake reactions of over 130 animal species, including dogs, cattle, and silkworms, with researchers gathering evidence across countries.

The statistics stumbled: many animals showed reactions only once, so statistically invalid; plus the line between ‘pre-quake abnormal’ and everyday ‘abnormal’ is too blurry. Mountains of data clearly can’t be solved in a few years.

In the end, the grand statistical effort surrendered to the huge data.

But GFZ wasn’t idle. The common view is dogs sense quake-generated waves, yet data on waves versus dog behavior is near zero. These Germans found another possibility while compiling the statistics:

‘Quakes also bring changes like groundwater movement, gas release, and rock friction; dogs and other animals likely detect these early, causing abnormal behavior.’

Canadian animal researcher Dr. Stanley Coren studied this with 200 local dogs, splitting them by ear type for stronger results: drop-eared (e.g., Labrador) versus erect-eared (e.g., French Bulldog).

The day before a quake, the erect-eared group showed clearly more anxiety and tension than the drop-eared group.

To strengthen the result, Dr. Coren split the erect-eared dogs into large-skull and small-skull groups.

Before the quake, small-skull dogs were more anxious and abnormal; large-skull dogs showed abnormality later than small-skull ones.

Though not backed by huge data, one thing is certain: dogs can sense pre-quake abnormalities β€” though not every dog has this skill.
