Can Cats Get Depression?

📝 Summary

Many people think of cats as very independent creatures, but cats also have a vulnerable side and moments of anxiety. As cat lovers we must understand what causes their anxiety.

1 Overview

Loud noises: A cat’s hearing is very acute; the TV, appliances, or even loud talking at home can trigger anxiety, and sudden thunder or storms can make it jump.

Being left alone: Every cat has its own personality. Try to create a safe space where it can relax, or tread softly when leaving to ease its sense of loneliness.

Constant holding: Cats really dislike being held all the time, and unlike humans they do not link this to expressions of love—they usually just feel bothered.

Strangers / other cats: Cats are not socially outgoing animals; unfamiliar guests at home put them under great stress. If you plan to add another pet, consider whether the reigning cat will accept it sharing its once-exclusive space—and if you do, never favor the new one over the old.

Unexpected surprises: Online there are many clips of cats startled by things suddenly appearing—seemingly funny, but this can leave a psychological scar and cause anxiety, so better not do it!

Nowhere to hide: Some love minimalist style and strip the home of clutter, but if a cat has no hidden space to retreat to, its stress multiplies and turns into anxiety!

Harsh words: Sometimes a cat does something ‘wrong’ by accident and does not know it is wrong. Yelling or even physically punishing it in such moments only adds fear and stress. If the cat was previously abused, the situation is only worse.

In fact cats are not as cold and tough as the stereotype suggests; each has its own personality and is mostly rather fragile. For their physical and mental health, owners should pay more attention and reduce these anxiety triggers, so they can happily stay by our side!

We hope your cat is a member of your family, not a plaything. Treat them well; do not copy the silly stunts seen on short-video apps, which only lowers everyone’s intelligence.
