A prolapsed rectum cannot heal on its own. Although cats and dogs recover well, a prolapse still needs prompt veterinary treatment.
If it is only rectal eversion from constipation and not a true prolapse, relieving the constipation and adjusting the diet may cure it. But severe prolapse usually needs surgery; if part of the rectum has died, the necrotic tissue is removed before repair to avoid life-threatening infection.
