Chinchillas, also called chinchilla rats, are popular pet rodents loved for their looks and easy care. They are gentle, clean, low-odor, and hardy; they eat only vegetarian food, use dust baths, and signal fear by barking. Feed limited apple and hay, avoid peanuts, soy, and excess water.

1 Benefits of Keeping a Chinchilla

1. Chinchillas are very gentle and well-behaved; they do not bite and are not aggressive. As highland animals they are hardy, rarely sick, self-cleaning, and hardly ever get parasites. They bathe in dust and need little company; with food and water they live on their own.

2. They are strict vegetarians, so their droppings are dry oval pellets with no odor, fine indoors. Their fur is very soft and they barely shed. They can be caged together but need time to adjust and a large enough cage.

3. They are sensitive; new places and strangers make them nervous, and when scared they vocalize, so the owner notices quickly.

4. They can eat only apple among fresh fruit; other fresh vegetables and fruit are unsuitable because of excess water their gut cannot handle, causing diarrhea. Avoid peanuts and soy: peanuts are oily, and soy swells with water in the gut, causing discomfort or even fatal blockage.

5. They leave uneaten low-value food; clear it promptly. Alfalfa is a main feed but causes rapid weight gain in excess, so give it as a supplement about twice a week.

Their thick fur makes summer hard; move them to an air-conditioned room to avoid heatstroke. They are drought-tolerant but still need clean water, never raw.
