Bee Sting vs Wasp Sting in Dogs: What’s the Difference?

๐Ÿ“ Summary

Bee stingers stay in the skin (one sting); wasp stingers are reusable (repeated stings, more dangerous). Remove the stinger, wash bee stings with soapy water and wasp stings with vinegar, ice the spot, and seek a vet for breathing trouble or shock.

1 Bee Sting vs Wasp Sting in Dogs: What’s the Difference?

1. Signs of a sting

1) Bees usually hit the thin-furred face, where the stinger reaches skin easily, so many dogs end up with a swollen ‘pig head.’ Simple swelling is the optimistic case. A few extreme cases show breathing trouble, drinking trouble, even shock โ€” fatal allergic reactions. This is the dangerous part.

2) After a sting the dog gets restless, scratches or bites the spot, drools, the area reddens, swells widely, feels hot, and breaks out in hives.

If only simple swelling with no other allergy, do not worry โ€” it is mild and not life-threatening. But with these severe signs, go to the clinic at once: breathing difficulty, whole-body weakness, severe swelling of the throat, head, or neck. To avoid a fatal threat, get a vet at once for such signs.

2. What to do

If only swelling with normal spirits and no severe allergy, no clinic needed; ease the discomfort at home:

1) Stay calm, check for a leftover stinger; if present, pull it with tweezers or scrape it off with a flat edge โ€” never pinch it out by hand.

If stung by a bee, its venom is acidic, so wash with baking-soda or soapy water, weakly alkaline, to cut toxicity.

A wasp’s venom is alkaline, so wash with a weakly acidic liquid like vinegar.

Also ice the wound to ease pain.

2) Only use an antihistamine for severe allergy, and never a human one, with strict dosing. If no allergic reaction, no allergy medicine is needed.
