Basic Training Every Dog Owner Should Know
π Summary
Train your dog with patience using treats, toys and clear timing. Teach sit, shake and down through luring and immediate reward; address food guarding by hand-feeding so the dog trusts you as the food source; and housebreak by guiding to a designated toilet with attractant spray and rewards. Consistency is key, and professional help suits stubborn large breeds.
1 Command Training
Sit: Stand in front of your standing dog with a treat above its head; most dogs will sit naturally to follow the food. Reward the instant it sits – late rewards confuse the cause and effect. Many dogs learn the ‘sit’ cue after a few repetitions.
Shake: With the dog sitting, offer your hand and place its paw on yours while saying ‘shake’, give a reward. After a few tries the dog understands the cue.
Down: Use a toy to lure the dog forward onto its belly, then reward. Once it follows the lure, replace food with a hand gesture and the ‘down’ cue, praising immediately so the dog reads your signal quickly.
2 Food Guarding
Guarding food is a natural instinct, often rooted in competing with littermates for a bowl. Never fix it by punishment; instead change the mindset – let the dog learn that plenty of good food comes from you. Hand-feed small amounts or place kibble bit by bit into the bowl so the dog realizes you are the safe source of food. Be patient and repeat; for difficult large dogs, seek a professional trainer.
3 Housebreaking
Outdoor elimination is easy once you lead the dog to grass or bushes. Indoors, use a dog toilet with a pee pad underneath. Guide the dog to the designated spot and reward immediately after it goes; pet-specific attractant sprays help build the habit. Training takes time, so stay consistent.
