A veiled chameleon gains color-changing ability at about 6 months. With changes in temperature and humidity, to regulate temperature, catch prey, or protect itself, it quickly changes cell spacing and uses light refraction to change color. Generally calm it is green; stressed it shows many dark spots; asleep it is yellow-green, with the pattern depending on the local environment.
