It is quite common for a cat to be hissed at by other cats after being spayed and returning home. After spaying, a cat’s hormone levels change, and the spayed cat inevitably picks up other smells at the veterinary clinic. When she returns home, the other cats may treat her as a strange cat because of the changed smell and, out of territorial instinct, hiss at her. The spayed cat hissing back at the others may be due to irritability from the pain of the spay wound.
For this situation, it is recommended to keep the cats separated for a period of time to avoid fights between them.
