Sudden heavy panting may indicate acute oxygen deprivation. Exercise intolerance, esophageal or airway blockage, pulmonary edema, and pneumonia can all cause severe oxygen shortage; take the dog to the hospital immediately for oxygen and to open the airway.

If severe, call the hospital on the way to describe the situation so the vet can prepare emergency drugs and an oxygen chamber for timely treatment.

If the panting is a sobbing, trembling spasm, it may be a respiratory infection; avoid dust, pollen, perfume, and disinfectants, keep air fresh, and see a vet for examination and treatment if severe.
