White Spots and Rot on Blood Parrot Fish: Causes and Treatment

1 Causes
Ich (white spot disease): the most common cause, from a heavy infestation of Ichthyophthirius. It usually follows water that is too cold, because the parasite grows and reproduces only below about 25°C. Saprolegnia (water mold): can also show white spots, from water left unchanged too long or bacteria invading a skin wound; early mold looks like white fuzzy patches, so owners often mistake it for ich — observe carefully before treating.
2 Treatment
For ich, raise the tank temperature to 30°C at once, change part of the water, and add aquarium salt to disinfect and treat. For severe ich, use 3% malachite green or methylene blue and isolate the sick fish to protect the others. For saprolegnia, soak the fish in 3% salt water for about 10 minutes — it should recover in about a week; if it has lost appetite and the case is severe, use a potassium permanganate or furacilin bath, or dab potassium permanganate on the rotten area. During treatment change water every 3 days so dirty water does not worsen things. Most fish disease starts with poor water quality, so change water regularly and keep the tank clean.
