How to Care for a Pregnant Rabbit
π Summary
A pregnant doe needs rising nutrition β especially in late gestation β to support embryos and later milk production, with green feed increased and concentrate eased only in the final three days. Handle her gently to avoid miscarriage around days 15β20, house her alone in a quiet, dry space, and disinfect the nest box before birth.
1 Nutrition
A doe must feed herself and the growing embryos, mammary glands, and uterus, so nutrition must be ample for her health and normal fetal development. Good condition means strong milk and sturdy kits.
Late gestation matters most: raise the amount and quality of feed as the fetuses grow, adding protein- and mineral-rich feeds like soybean cake and bone meal. Only in the last three days before birth ease the concentrate and shift to more succulent greens.
2 Daily Care
Prevent miscarriage. Days 15β20 are the danger window, so handle her carefully β one hand at the neck, one under the rump, gentle and low β and keep the environment quiet. Around day 15, house her alone in a dry space; in winter give warm water. For wool breeds, stop shearing and brushing during pregnancy so as not to disturb the fetuses.
3 Pre-Birth Prep
About three days before birth, clean and disinfect the cage and the nest box, removing debris so she is not stressed or infected at delivery. Once the disinfected box is in, let her get used to it and start pulling grass and fur to nest. Stay nearby during the birth in case of trouble.
