How to Care for a Spotted Hamster

1 Bathing
Many think hamsters never need baths, but they do — just never with water. A wet coat is hard to dry and invites chills, especially for this breed. Provide bath sand and, ideally, a small sand bath they can use when they like.
2 Handling
They are mild but wary. When scared or stressed they squeal and may bite the bars. Never grab hard or rough; if the hamster resists, don’t force it — scoop gently so it feels secure.
3 Housing
They are strongly solitary. Except for mating, they prefer to live alone — even two raised together will fight and can be injured or killed. After mating, separate the male so he does not disturb the pregnant female.
4 Temperature
Below 15°C a hamster grows sleepy and may enter pseudo-hibernation from the slight cold — and may not wake. Keep the habitat around 25°C. Small pet though it is, careless care can be fatal, so stay attentive.
