1 When Bathing Is Safe

Guinea pigs can be bathed, but avoid washing one that is under a month old. Very young pups have weak immune systems and fall ill easily, and the bath itself is startling enough to do their health real harm.

2 How to Bathe a Guinea Pig

Gather a suitably sized tub, lukewarm water, a clean towel, a hairdryer, and a small-animal shampoo. Pour warm water into the tub to a level that stays below the guinea pig’s mouth, add a few drops of shampoo and stir it in. Lower the animal in slowly, wet the coat gently, then massage the body softly while combing through the fur so the shampoo reaches the skin and lifts loose hair.

Rinse by replacing the tub water and washing again until the coat is completely clean. Keep your grip controlled and watch the guinea pig’s reactions so it does not thrash and escape from discomfort.

As soon as the bath is done, blot off the water with a towel and blow-dry the fur. Once dry, do not return the guinea pig straight to the cage — let it rest somewhere warm and dry until the coat is fully aired out, then put it back.

A bath always stresses the skin a little, so do not bathe guinea pigs often. Too-frequent washing can damage the skin’s protective barrier and let infection in. In summer, once every two weeks is plenty, and there is no need to bathe more often than that.
