How to Manage Heavy Shedding in Dogs

Never use human products; pick a mildly acidic pet shampoo. Alkaline washes break the skin’s pH balance, causing roughness, itch, and flaking that worsens shedding when the dog scratches. Bathe 2–3 times a month — too often weakens the skin’s defenses — rinse fully with no residue, and dry thoroughly after.
4 Moderate Sunlight
Sun keeps skin and coat healthy, and dogs love it — but provide shade and limit time to avoid sunburn or dehydration.
5 Keep Clean and Dry
Dampness feeds parasites and, in summer, eczema; a dog that scratches breaks the skin and sheds more. Wash and sun the pet’s pad and bedding regularly, and use a mite cleaner when needed.
6 Trimming, Not Shaving
Thin the coat moderately, but do not shave it off. Shaving does not reduce shedding — it just makes hairs too short to see, raising the risk they are inhaled — and exposes the skin to disease.
