Seasonal shedding has traits: large areas, ‘snowflakes’ everywhere.

Coat grows cyclically; normal metabolism shedding happens — groom regularly so they don’t swallow too much and burden the gut.

Most shedding is physiological; what about pathological?

Fungal skin disease causes round/irregular bald patches with dandruff; damaged roots shed in clumps.

Mite skin disease causes generalized shedding, especially demodex;

Parasites (lice, fleas, mites) cause patchy shedding, irregular;

Beyond skin disease, daily habits affect coat growth.

Shaving too short damages follicles; winter failure to regrow is mistaken for shedding;

Diet: too much salt or poor nutrition;

Aging lowers metabolism, more shedding;

Over-bathing breaks the skin’s pH balance, causing shedding;

Too little sunlight also sheds, and raises fungal risk in cats;
