1 Early Signs of Melanoma in Dogs

I. Symptoms of dog melanoma

Malignancy depends on site: skin and eye are lower; paw 60%; mouth highest. It may be malignant or benign, often dark or unpigmented. Benign is common; malignant grows fast with high spread risk.

On lips and nail beds, malignant melanoma is most common. Breeds like Mini Schnauzer, Standard Schnauzer, and Scottish Terrier are prone; males more than females. Malignant ones are raised lumps, often ulcerated, gray or pink in the mouth. On nail beds, swelling with nail loss and lower-leg bone damage. These can get secondary infection and be misdiagnosed.

II. Treatment

1. It spreads fast, so is hard to treat. Current options:

2. Surgery to remove the tumor and surrounding tissue; sometimes remove a toe or jaw.

3. Chemotherapy.

4. Radiation.

If it spreads elsewhere, treatment becomes very hard.
