1 Chow Chow Care and Feeding
Things to Note When Raising a Chow Chow:
Chow Chow puppies are weaned at about 6 weeks and then eat normally, but from 1 to 6 months they should be fed 3-4 times a day. From weaning to about 3 months, feed at 7am, 12pm, 5pm, and 10pm, four times daily. From the 5th to 8th month, feed three times (morning, noon, evening), with puppy portions about one-third to half of an adult’s. In the months after weaning (within 2-3 months or less), the puppy’s diet shapes its lifelong eating habits. If you plan to keep it on dedicated dog food, accustom it to that taste during this period. Chow Chows have weak digestion, so dog food is best. Once grown, owners may find commercial food costly and make their own: mix cornmeal, cabbage, egg, and beef with salt, bind with egg and beef broth, form into balls, and steam 15 minutes.
Chow Chow puppies can also eat Pedigree Vital Puppy food, a balanced, high-protein diet that aids muscle growth, supplies vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, and protects the immune system; its calcium and phosphorus also support healthy bones. So a nutritionally balanced food, introduced gradually, is suitable for Chow Chows.
