πŸ“ Summary

Clinics often see odd cases - dogs vomiting or crying with socks, rags, toys or nails found on X-ray, some piercing the esophagus. These threaten life.

1 Overview

Without prompt care they cause blockage, shifted needles and threat to vital organs – all called gastric foreign bodies. Usually from fighting over food, play, or accidental swallowing; some from pica due to missing nutrients; some dogs eat stones.

A dog that ate something usually shows poor appetite, intermittent vomiting, or severe vomiting from pyloric blockage; or a sharp item pierces the stomach causing pain and fever on touch; some block in the gut, restless and vomiting.

Small, soft, smooth items can be induced to vomit or pass; small sharp items like fishhooks or pins can be swallowed in a cotton-ball capsule to pass safely; large, many, or perforating items need surgery.

Dogs are family; hide sharp dangers, watch for odd behavior and missing socks, rags or toys, and see a vet promptly to save the golden treatment window.
