I. Start Training from the Beagle’s Habits
Beagles are born hunting dogs, and the best training window is generally the puppy stage from 2 to 6 months. Training should begin with the dog’s daily habits, starting with simple exercises and gradually moving to harder skills as the body develops.
Once a Beagle is weaned and can walk normally, you can train it to heel so it follows your pace outdoors without running off. At the start, use treats to lure it into staying close. After the Beagle completes the exercise, you can give it the food as a reward.
II. Methods for Training a Beagle to Hunt
To build a puppy’s brave character, accustom it to gunshots or blasting sounds outdoors from an early age. A puppy will be a little frightened the first time it hears a gunshot; the hunter should gently pet and reassure it, and it will gradually adapt with repetition. To foster bravery, the puppy must learn the scent of game young. Prepare a basin using the hide and meat of small prey and let the puppy sniff and paw at it to develop its sense of smell and interest in quarry, laying the groundwork for tracking, chasing and attacking. If conditions allow, from six months on feed the puppy fresh game meat regularly; before eating, have it sniff first — so that when hunting later, the prey’s scent excites rather than scares the dog, sharpening its nerve to chase bravely. To build courage, during real hunting training after six months reinforce your commands so it learns to track, search and attack.
III. Reward Methods
1. Food reward: hold the food just above the Beagle’s nose to catch its attention. This works best when the dog is hungry.
2. Physical affection: gently stroking the Beagle’s body is an important reward. After a while, the dog will take it as praise.
3. A reward toy is an encouragement — let the Beagle show off its favorite toy. You will soon learn which toy it likes best.
