Why Hamsters Play Dead
1. It is self-protection, a natural instinct; when a hamster feels a deadly threat, it plays dead without hesitation.
2. Hamsters are timid; when startled they play dead to protect themselves and calm down.
3. Some hamsters sleep so deeply they do not react when touched; owners may think they are playing dead, but they are only sleeping.
4. Frequent cage changes or over-cleaning makes the hamster over-stressed and play dead.
How to Respond
1. If a hamster keeps playing dead, put a few others of its kind in the cage; sensing companions it will slowly wake.
2. Pick the playing-dead hamster up and play with it a bit; it will wake to play. Or ignore it; when hungry or thirsty it will get up to eat or drink.
3. A hamster runs from strong smells, so place something pungent nearby, or put its favorite food beside it; it will get up at the scent.
4. If it plays dead for a long time, check body temperature and heartbeat to rule out real cardiac arrest.
5. In cold winter, check whether the hamster has entered pseudo-hibernation; it must be woken at once or may never wake.
Playing dead is not a big problem, but pseudo-hibernation can be fatal, so keep hamsters warm in cold weather to avoid it.
